I hage with a simple script (75 lines) which uses REXML to mangle some
XML. A change in the data file it was processing caused the problem to
appear (though I didn't get the core dump, as far as I recall)

Upgrading from a 2003-08-28 CVS snapshot (which exhibited the problem)
to a 2003-09-04 CVS snapshot *appears* to fix the problem. Of course it
could just have moved to a place where it isn't tickled.

well, a bug was found in ruby which can completely explain the error given
in [ruby-talk:80435]
