It is traveling due northward and becomes higher in the sky with each passing night and the next one to two weeks should be the best time for seeing it. And by the latter part of April, it is far enough north that it will be visible throughout the entire night, passing just a few degrees from the north celestial pole a month later. It still may be bright enough to detect with binoculars at that time, and in fact, it may remain visible with moderatesize backyard telescopes for most of the summer. This appears to be Comet PANSTARRS' first visit to the inner solar system from the Oort Cloud, the vast cloud of comets in the really distant solar system that has remained there since its earliest days. Because of gravitational influences from the various planets, the comet will leave the inner solar system in an orbit that should bring it back a little over 100,000 years from now perhaps to thrill our descendants of that distant era. Comet PANSTARRS is only one of several interesting comets that will be arriving within the nottodistant future. Indeed, skywatchers in the southern hemisphere have had a second comet which was discovered a year ago by the Mount Lemmon survey program in Arizona simultaneously visible to the unaided eye along with Comet PANSTARRS. That object likely will have faded quite a bit by the time it becomes visible from the northern hemisphere in early May. Meanwhile, the stage is being set for Comet ISON, which has the potential of becoming one of the brightest comets of the past several centuries, when it makes its passage through the inner solar system late this year. It doesn't reach its closest approach to the sun and Earth until the fall of 2014, although it's not expected to become bright enough to see with the unaided eye. However, on Oct. 19 of next year, it will pass extremely close to the planet Mars. And while the probability of such an event happening is quite low, at this time the uncertainties are such that an impact onto Mars cannot be ruled out. Stay tuned for further developments.
