(CNN) Though he had publicly suggested Mitt Romney pick Sen. Marco Rubio to join the GOP ticket, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday in an interview on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" that he is "very happy with the choice of Paul Ryan" although the pick was a "gamble."

"I think that Governor <a href=http://cheaponlineshoessale.com... shoes outlet</a> Romney has made a gamble here. He's taken a risk," Giuliani said.

Earlier in the day, Giuliani slammed Vice President Joe Biden for being "not very smart" in response to controversial comments the vice president made at a campaign stop Tuesday.

Oxford, Ohio (CNN) A few days ago, Sen. Rob Portman was touted as being on the short list under consideration as Mitt Romney's running mate. Despite being passed over when the nod went to Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Portman was on hand and <a href=http://adidasrunningshoesstore.co... adidas shoes on sale</a> enthusiastic Wednesday at a GOP rally in Ohio featuring nowvicepresidential candidate Ryan.

Appearing together at Ryan's alma mater Miami University of Ohio Portman praised the House Budget Committee chairman for his work on Capitol Hill and called him "a good friend."

Oxford, Ohio (CNN) Rep. Paul Ryan on Wednesday called President Barack Obama's criticisms of his Medicare proposal a "distraction," and picked up a line from his running mate Mitt Romney that accuses Obama of running an election "based on anger and division."

"You see our payroll taxes from our paychecks are supposed <a href=http://cheaponlineshoessale.com... shoes outlet</a> to go to two programs: Social Security and Medicare, period. Now because of President Obama they're also going to pay for Obamacare," he said.

(CNN) Mitt Romney's senior adviser Ed Gillespie said Wednesday in a CNN interview that he did not know when his candidate would balance the federal budget, the day after Romney's new vice presidential candidate, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, said the campaign had not yet "run the numbers."

Romney, meanwhile, was on the campaign trail this week praising Ohio Gov. John Kasich's understanding "that it's government's job to balance budgets" and saying his plan would "get us to a balanced budget faster than the plan <Ryan> originally put forward" while providing few details about how he would balance the federal budget, which he said in June would be reached "within eight to 10 years."

(CNN) Artur Davis, the former fourterm Democratic congressman from Alabama, said Wednesday that Vice President Joe Biden was propagating "racial viciousness" when he said Mitt Romney's regulatory policies would "put y'all back in chains."

Biden made the comments Tuesday to a predominantly black crowd in Danville, Virginia, a city with a long history of racial tension. In May Davis announced he was switching to the GOP, leaving the door open to a future political bid as a Republican.

Dubuque, Iowa (CNN) Continuing an increasingly heated campaign exchange on the topic of Medicare, President Obama defended his record here on Wednesday against attacks from his Republican rivals that he has cut benefits to seniors.

Linking the reforms included in Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's congressional budget proposal with Mitt Romney's campaign platform, Obama argued that they're attacking his plan because they don't want to sell their own.
