Hi all,

I am trying to read the amount of systemmemory through code from Randy
Birch I found on:

http://vbnet.mvps.org/code/system/global...

But, although I have 3GB of RAM, it only reports 2GB.

What's wrong or is it VB6 htat is to old?

The truth does not need index cards or memorization.

Has anyone seen Yoko marching with the folks at Occupy Wall Street?
She doesn't live that far away. Maybe she could go down and do a free
concert--she might get a bigger audience if she already goes to
perform where a crowd has chosen to gather for a cause..

Hopefully no one at the crowd will yell at her "you are part of the 1
percent!!!" :)

If Yoko sang to the crowd, they would disperse. Who needs police in
riot gear? Just unleash a singing Yoko!

LOL. What song do you think Yoko should sing to the Occupy Wall
Street crowd? Perhaps Power to the People? or "New York City"?
If she sang the song "Money" she really would be "Walking on Thin
Ice" (little joke there)

Or how about her new "just imagine there's no world hunger" campaign?
It's sure to be effective.

And she could follow "walking on thin ice" with "We're all water".

Paste the code below into a new form and run it. Then check the Immediate window for the report....

LFS

Private Sub Form_Load()
' OS memory
Dim oWMIOS
Dim oSystem

' Property list at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/win32_operating...

Set oWMIOS = GetObject("winmgmts:").InstancesOf("Win32_OperatingSystem")

For Each oSystem In oWMIOS
Debug.Print "OS Version:", oSystem.Caption; " ("; oSystem.Version; ")"
Debug.Print "Visible:", oSystem.TotalVisibleMemorySize; " KB"
Debug.Print "Free RAM:", oSystem.FreePhysicalMemory; " KB"
Debug.Print "Free Virtual:", oSystem.FreeVirtualMemory; " KB"
Next

Set oSystem = Nothing
Set oWMIOS = Nothing

' Installed memory
Dim Device, Total

For Each Device In GetObject("winmgmts:").InstancesOf("Win32_PhysicalMemory")
Total = Total + CDec(Device.Capacity)
Next
Set Device = Nothing

Debug.Print "Installed memory:", Format$(Total / (2 ^ 20), "0.00 MB"), Total

End Sub

It isn't that VB6 is too old.

The 'problem' is because of a common misconception of what is being
measured. What this function (and others of its kind) returns is a
'number' based on the system's *current* usage of both physical and
virtual memory, what is *available* for your application to allocate
at the *time* your program made the call.

There are quite a few items that can effect what that number might be.
Just for one example - the particular platform - your application
might only have 'access' to 2g no matter how much RAM you have.

Because of this the 'number' is also highly volatile. You can be
running several applications and utilities with the Task Manger open -
have them all take a snapshot - and get numbers all over the place.

If you need a more accurate number you need to go elsewhere, and Larry
gave you a good alternative.

BUT even with its inherent "inaccuracy" it is still quite accurate
within this sense - if it says only 2gb - then 2gb is all your
application can get, so nothing else really matters. <bg>

Thank you!

Both presented solutions gave me 3GB.
With Larry's solution, I saw there is 4GB installed.
But Win XP SP3 only uses +- 3.2GB of it

Thanks again

Windows uses a portion of it, typically, for things like video and
sometimes other devices.
