Locking: sql server internal mechanism for saying "I got this and you may
(or may not) play with it"

Blocking: the guy (spid) who wants to play with something exclusively locked
is blocked

Deadlock: spid 11 has a lock on resource A1 and wants to get a lock on
resource B1. spid 22 has a lock on resource B1 and wants to get a lock on
resource A1. They will sit there, holding their lock and waiting for the
other thing to be granted to them, indefinitely
