Multithreading with large amounts of data

I am wondering weather I should look into a threading library or just
use an axEXE for this project. Iv'e read exes can be slow when passing
large amounts of data to them. My project could involve potentially
passing large strings to the exe and then passing a different large
string based on the original string back to the main exe. Which is the
best way to go?
