A replacement for about-to-be-closed NGs

Mark McGinty

Greets,

To those of us who, for whatever reason, are still using "unsupported"
technologies, these news groups are a valuable resource. The quasi-related
forums to which Microsoft has invited us are hardly replacements, posts
about
'classic' technologies will be OT, and I'm sure pretty much everyone who
posts questions about them would rather see responses more meaningful than,
"consider upgrading to [something that is still supported]."

In hopes of filling the void that will be left by these pending closures,
I've added a section to a forum I created a couple of years ago,
www.deprecatethis.com. I created it after reading that the Windows API was
to be
deprecated. I think the sentiment applies here as well, so I'm offering it
as a
replacement -- of course it isn't a news group, but at least the questions
we used to post in these newsgroups will be on-topic. Another plus is that
the site admin (that would be me) will be highly receptive to suggestions,
making this a chance to shape a new community.

To be honest at this moment www.deprecatethis.com isn't much of a forum --
the software
(Yet Another Forum) is decent, but it isn't quite a hot-bed of discussion.
About
the only thing that has attracted any attention is a script I wrote to work
around the Send To->Mail Recipient problem in x64 with Office/Outlook
installed. That script is the only thing anyone (besides myself) has posted
about.

But maybe all that will change, I've created forums for classic ADO, classic
ASP and VB6; any suggestions/requests for additional
forums are welcome. (Reasonable suggestions will be implemented promptly.)

I understand the preference for NNTP over web-based forums, but
unfortunately I lack the means to host an NNTP server, this is all I have to
offer, so... Please consider yourself invited to join.

-Mark McGinty

btw, if sending this post makes me a spammer, I apologize for the offense.
Ordinarily I wouldn't have done this but these NGs are going away soon, a
window is closing, so I figured what do I have to lose?

Windows itself is about to be deprecated. Personally I think it is about
time we all moved to Linux.

I don't know about all that, marketshare speaks for itself... so I'd say
rumors of its pending demise are greatly exagerated.

For ms.p.vb.g.d group it appears the consensus is to move to existing
comp.lang.basic.visual.misc newsgroup. Most of these groups wouldn't be
terribly off-topic if at all there and until there's sufficient traffic
to generate the need, I see no reason for anything else.

And, of course, it's still to be determined whether the mirrored sites
will cease to carry the msnews hierarchies they're currently mirroring
just because MS pulls the plug on their servers.

Don't have any problem w/ the invitation but it doesn't seem necessary
to give up on usenet over the withdrawal of MS from participating
(fortunately).

Pass. I, and many others here do not like web forums for a plethora of reasons. Please refer to my signature for the planned protocol.

I suppose you could be right, but personally I think the desktop market is
going to decline, and Micro$oft with it. The big money in the future will be
in getting the little money from the little people (I'm talking about a
dollar a deal stuff), something which Micro$oft have not shown themselves to
be particularly good at.

I decided just last week to try again with my
periodic foray into Linux. Suse setup would let
me do partitioning but there seemed to be no
way to override its recommendation for the install
partition(s). So I tried Mandriva...not too bad after
I ran setup a dozen times or so. (Setup couldn't see
my graphic card that was replacing the onboard
graphics, and of course there was no help
documentation for setup options. I had to figure
out by trial and error that I needed to run setup
with the "text-only" option. Of course. How silly
of me. :)

Then I decided to adjust the firewall before
going online, but that had no docs and very few
settings.

All in all, it was a deflating couple of hours.
I keep hoping that someday I can just install
Linux and not spend weeks fiddling around, doing
research, and editing arcane config files deep in
/etc -- just to get the basics set up. But I don't
see that day on the horizon.

Mayayana,
It has been awhile since I played around with Linux, but I seem to
remember Ubuntu being about the easiest install of Linux that I had
ever used. You can download a version and install it with iso at no
cost at all. They also had pretty good newsgroups. You might give it a
try.

I have a multiboot including Ubuntu, "almost" windows.
You can even run it from the CD for testing, no possibility to save any
settings though.

Yes, but I wanted finished Linux, not
kiddie Linux.
