The stories haven't been uniformly good, but I find the characters of
Sherlock and Watson really great modernizations.

Yeah, they got a bit cutesy and off-focus in Series Three, but at no
point did they abandon telling a good mystery. It's just that the
mystery sometimes took a back seat to character interaction. But given
the characters and the chemistry between them, it's easy to forgive. For
me, at least. And for one series, at least.
