[ANN] PDF::Writer 1.1.8

Gregory Brown

3/16/2008 11:53:00 PM

Hi folks,

With the help of community members, we've cut another small
maintenance release.

This one takes another crack at the page numbering issues, and also
fixes a problem with font embedding.

Here are the related tickets:

http://stonecode.svnrepository.co.../trac.cg...
http://stonecode.svnrepository.co.../trac.cg...

Thanks for those who submitted patches and bug reports!

== Get it ==

gem install pdf-writer

or download at:
http://rubyforge.org/projects...

== Support ==

Mailing list:

http://groups.google.com/group/...

Trac wiki / bug tracker:

http://stonecode.svnrepository.co...

== Project News ==

We're currently working on Ruby 1.9 compatibility issues and also
thinking up some small enhancements for a PDF::Writer 1.2. Look for
more news soon!

== Shameless Self Promotion ==

For those that haven't heard about it, I'm trying to take off several
months of work to hack on important open source Ruby projects. One of
my project ideas was to start a re-write of PDF::Writer from the
ground up, but I'd probably need at least 3 months of funding to
seriously consider that. To learn more / donate, see the description
and links at:

http://pledgie.com/cam...

Those who donate will be able to vote for which project I should work
on, so if a PDF::Writer rewrite sounds good to you, it may be worth
your while :)

C:\ruby\src\pdf_writer-1.1.8>rake test
(in C:/ruby/src/pdf_writer-1.1.8)
rake aborted!
no such file to load -- meta_project
C:/ruby/src/pdf_writer-1.1.8/rakefile:14
(See full trace by running task with --trace)

BTW, disabling the RubyForge forums and using Trac is a mistake. Not
only do I prefer the one stop shopping of RubyForge, I have absolutely
no idea how to submit a ticket/feature request/discuss a possible
issue, etc.

I'd be shocked if this worked anyway, since PDF::Writer has no unit tests.

I don't think that the RubyForge forums have been in place for a long
time for PDF::Writer. I'll let Greg update the contact info to point
to the PDF::Writer discussion group on Google Groups (the mailing list
on RubyForge is going to be shut down on the first of April, which
date was just pulled out of my head).

I own my own business, internet-based. Mostly I serve as an agent
finding independent consultants work in a certain software system. So
any vacations I take are always working vacations, but it affords me a
certain flexibility and I can run my business from anywhere in the
world. I'm going to the UK on business; taking on a partner there who
will bring in a lot more business. Ireland and Wales is pleasure, going
to Dingle to see my friend Myles O'Reilly (Juno Falls) perform at a gig,
then to Dublin to see friends. In Wales, I'm going in search of this
magical stone circle someone told me about. Taking my niece to Ireland
with me, because after the Pearl Jam show in NY (her first), she met a
bunch of my Irish friends. She also likes Myles' music
(myspace.com/junofalls).

You know, the thing which surprised me most about the West Coast solo
shows, is that he is really quite funny! Tells lots of stories, and has
a great sense of humor. You should join the fan club again anyway...
actually, the fan club seats are random for this tour, so you'd have had
as good a shot as anyone. Good luck with the sale tomorrow. Email me
by substituting "lauriehester" for "myname"... I would love to meet you
at the shows. They also had significant releases a few days before the
shows on the West Coast if you get shut out tomorrow. Don't buy on Ebay
right away, prices dropped to face by the time of the shows. I'm only
going to the two Chicago shows; have friends there to stay with, and
after this PJ tour, I'm kind of broke...
