If you take a look at the page 3.4.5 Destructuring Lambda Lists
http://clhs.lisp.se/Body...
of the hyper spec.
Why is the following line listed? It does not seem to be in the syntax of
the destructuring-lambda-list.

envvar::= [&environment var]

Is envvar really supposed to be in the lambda-list definition?
Or is it simply superfluously defined as if someone copy-pasted too much when creating the page?

Did you not look in the text above [emphasis added]?

A destructuring lambda list can contain all of the lambda list
keywords listed for macro lambda lists EXCEPT FOR &ENVIRONMENT,
and supports destructuring in the same way.

The BNF below that is just a copy of the spec for Macro Lambda Lists
[excepting the "pattern" non-terminal], and with the "envvar"
removed from the "lambda-list" non-terminal. I don't know for sure,
but I suspect that the "envvar" might be here in this case just
to alert you that it's *not* used for Destructuring Lambda Lists! ;-}
[Oe else is a copy/paste error, as you suggest. The CLHS isn't merfect.]

Similarly, in 3.4.4 Macro Lambda Lists, the "pattern" non-terminal
is not actually used anywhere else in the BNF, but it *is* referenced
in the English text which follow.

In any case, it is quite common for the BNF to contain such
apparently "extra" information:

Here the term [example non-terminal] might appear to be ``dead''

BNF is not just to guide parsing, but also to define useful terms
for reference in the descriptive text which follows.

Yes of course I looked at the explanation; that's why I asked. The explanation says that &environment cannot be used, but then goes on to include it in the BNF.

It basically says, here is how to properly form something that you can't use anyway.

That's why I mentioned CLHS 1.4.1.2.3 to you later. Again:

1.4.1.2.3 Additional Uses for Indirect Definitions in
Modified BNF Syntax

In some cases, an auxiliary definition in the BNF might appear
to be unused within the BNF, but might still be useful elsewhere.

Based on that, they could have included the "envvar" non-terminal
in the CLHS 3.4.5 BNF *precisely* so they could have something to
point to when they said that you couldn't use it! ;-}

[Or, as you suggested, it was sloppy editing. Either works for me...]
