output to the screen?

I was wonder if its possible to print the command to the screen so you
see what it thinks it's supposed to do. By that i mean sort of printing
out the variables as they are stepping. For example do puts: <the
statement> : then execute <the statement> As a sort of very simple
de-bugging process.????
Any one know how?
