I have not carried out considerably hiking lately, but I've been instruction to get a Half Marathon in December. I had my feet sized early this year for operating footwear, so I knew I needed bigger boots when I was planning for that Yosemite trip I went on final week: I had been wearing size (11) shoes, but now needed (12-12.5). I bought these boots at a Hi-Tec clearance/outlet sale in August, and I am glad I did! These boots turned out to become a excellent option general, but could have already been better. The Good: They match my feet; I was capable to change the sock liner that came together with the boot having a Spenco PolySorb Total Assistance insert (exact same as I use in my running shoes; I've tall arches and have to have overpronation help); I had no blisters following the hike; the ankles have plenty of padding on either side, by using a rubber guard to protect the leather, as well. The Bad: No heel-lock lacing system, to lock your heel much more firmly against the heel of your boot, related to running shoes. We climbed up working with the Mist Trail, and that is largely granite steps/stairs <and>was plenty tough because it was], then after Half Dome we descended following the John Muir Trail, that's less steep, but has plenty of switchbacks and is mostly hard-surfaced (rock and/or blacktop). The worst a part of walking back down the trail, particularly after within the John Muir, was that my toes were becoming smashed to the toes of my boots. <One>of my hiking buddies had precisely the same complaint with his boots, diverse brand.] I created confident to wear a nylon-spandex sock as a liner, and also a thick wool-lycra blend sock over that. This might have been cramping my toes, or maybe I should have purchased a size (13) instead of a (twelve). I did not expect my feet to swell as considerably as in my operating shoes all through education, but that was almost certainly a error. Hi-Tec offers their heel-lock lacing system (using a pair of hooks/loops closer on the ankle) on their Backpacking boots, but not their Light Hiking boots (based on seeking at their website). I'm certain I can still use these boots for other hikes while in the area. I would recommend these boots to others, just make sure they will fit appropriately with two (2) pairs of socks. Also, they are described as water-proof, but I did not place it towards the check. YMMV.UPDATE 2012-04-05: I wore these once more on a hike around Pinecrest Lake during the Sierra Nevada mountains in January, 2012. Once again, my toes had been crammed in to the toe-box with the boots for the duration of the down-slope sections in the trail. But even during flat sections from the trail the size (twelve) boots felt too snug in the toe. I recall the footbed felt like it was a little thin as far as dampening the feel of your rocks underfoot around the trail in and close to Pinecrest, and also all through the Half Dome hike. I just donated these on the Goodwill, since I missed the REI garage sale at my neighborhood shop. I'm confident the Goodwill can come across them a very good home. I am currently breaking within a pair of <B><a href=http://www.dalinshoes.com&g... Nike Shoes</a></B> that I bought as a result of REI-Outlet online in size (13). We'll see how that goes.
