open-uri behind authenticated firewall

Hi,

I am behind an authenticated firewall. I have been able to make gem go
through the firewall by setting the HTTP_PROXY env var to
http://user:pass@proxy.com But the open method of the open-uri does
not go through this proxy by default.

open(address, :proxy => "http://user:pass@proxy.com") is not working.
Any ideas!?
