I will share a secret with you -- GOOGLE ;-). Searching for "Ruby
language history" (or
http://www.google.com/search?q=Ruby+langua...) produces the
following very relevant links:

http://www.rubycentral.com/faq/ru...

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2001/11/29...

http://blog.nicksieger.com/articles/2006/10/20/rubyconf-histo...

And many many other good resources. In case you hate Google, try Yahoo
;-)

Enjoy,
Gennady.

A black mamba bite is no laughing matter, as you
probably know. It can kill you, or you can lose the
limb where it bit you.

Will the Burmese Pythons eat them?

Pythons are not venomous, so they should stay
away from mambas unless of course pythons and
mambas don't live in the same places, in which
case pythons might not have evolved to be fearful
of mambas.

We humans have evolved to be afraid of spiders
and snakes. I like spiders and snakes, but I
wouldn't get involved with any I couldn't identify.
I get wolf spiders in the house frequently. They
can bite, but they don't want to, so I capture
them in my hand if they're small or on a
newspaper if they aren't, and dump them
unharmed out the back window. I occasionally
get parson's spiders in the house too, and
though they're not very big they do look a lot
more fearsome than wolf spiders, so I catch
them in a jar, or if I catch them on a paper
I'll have my eye on them and drop the paper
if they start running toward my hand faster
than I can switch hands to hold the paper
from the opposite side.

We should have evolved to be afraid of
mushrooms too, it seems to me, but that
doesn't seem to have taken as well, rather
surprisingly. I was in Alaska with Rook
once and saw some mushrooms that had
bright orange caps. Rook said "Don't
eat those", but the warning was
unnecessary. The vivid orange colour
was already warning enough!

Not all poisonous mushrooms give
such a clear warning though. The
great composer Schobert (not Schubert),
his wife and eldest son, and several
other people died after eating mushrooms
they thought were safe, to the dismay of
Mozart who admired Schobert's music.
