fxri incomplete

X-Man

I like fxri but why is it that some very essential libraries, e.g. the
socket library (with classes TCPSocket, TCPServer, etc.), are not
included?

It is sad that fxri is so crippled. I have to grab the PickAxe2 book
all the time.

Hello:

Fxri is based on ri. Ri by default only contains documentation on the
core library. TCPSocket and the like are included in the standard
library, not the core library. I'm not sure how to have ri see the
standard library. However, I think that is the main issue.

I've just found out that the online "Ruby Standard Library
Documentation" at http://www.ruby-doc.o... includes the socket
library, so I don't have to refer to PickAxe2 if I didn't want to (and
if I'm connected).

That page should also have a link for downloading a tarball or zip file
of the std-lib rdocs.

You can read them 24-hours a day!

It's not quite what you're looking for but Konoye's arrangement of a
Ceremonial Japanese Prelude entitled "Etenraku" was issued on Cala's
"Philadelphia Rarities" CD. The piece had been recorded on a 1934
78rpm disc by Stokowski and was transferred by Ward Marston along with
other similar out-of-the-way works (CACD0501) ...

Thanks to Ward Marston for this transfer, and to you for sharing it (with, I
understand, Ward's permission).

Thank you so much for this posting and for finally satisfying my long-
standing
curiosity about this landmark recording (i.e. the first Mahler
symphony
recorded by the electrical process).

It's certainly a curiosity. One has to admire the foresight of those
responsible.
Realize that Victor, more than a year earlier, had captured the New
York
Philharmonic under Mengelberg in a stunning Heldenleben. [Still
impressive
over 8 decades later!] I wonder if Willem ever suggested to Victor
execs that
they might also do a Mahler symphony while they were at it and, if so,
what the reaction might have been. (Probably something like "It won't
sell.")

In any event, and even granting an 'A' for effort and making
allowances
for the recording process, the strings of the Tokyo ensemble fall
uncomfortably on the ears. Also, there is a disfiguring cut towards
the
end of the third movement (the only one I've had a chance to audition
thus far....
........saving the rest for later). One wonders if this was a matter
of
expediency (i.e. squeezing the third movement onto four sides) or
of missing pages in the score to which the artists had access.

Jerry

P.S. - Naxos is missing a bet if they don't slip this into their
Historical Reissue
series. Wager they'd sell a fair number of copies in Japan.
