I don't know if you're interested, but the HP testdrive program has a
few OpenVMS machines setup, if you just need access to an OpenVMS box to
play on.

I recall back in the mid-90's supporting some DEC VAX OpenVMS servers
that we were using as a part of cellular Over the Air Activations. The
contractors left the project and literally no one in the Corporate IT
group was familiar with OpenVMS. I picked up a book and after a couple
of weeks added VAX Admin to my list of (uncompensated) titles. Nothing
personal, but OpenVMS sure seemed ugly from what I recall. It was
stable but seemed like it was out of the Stone Age. Of course that was
version 6.1 or something...
