The other day I found myself sitting opposite Chubby Checker in a
boarding lounge at the Philadelphia International Airport. I sat there
for a while, thinking of how I was going to approach him. I'd even
formulated specific "talking points" in my head--Hank Ballard, Dee Dee
Sharp, Freddy & the Dreamers!--just so that I wouldn't end up saying
something vapid like "Love your music." I screwed up my nerve, got up
and walked toward him, and then thought better of it: Nah, just walk
on, and let the man read his book in peace.
