.NET Framework fails to install on Win98 (ERROR CODE 1603)

(Paul Booth)

12/26/2002 7:20:00 PM

Hello,

I have been trying to install the .Net framework on a Win98 machine
but the installer seems to freeze during the 'Installing Components'
phase. Eventually a box appears with the message 'Installer is no
longer responding'.

I made sure that I rebooted the machine and closed all open
applications before I started the install.

I have seen posts from others with similar problems but the solution
for them was to change directory permissions or login as the
administrator. This is obviously not applicable on a Win98 machine.

I have included a copy of the dotNetFx.log file below.

Many thanks,

Paul Booth.

.NET Framework cannot be installed on Windows98.

It requires Windows NT (including Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows
XP).

This is not correct, the Framework can be installed on all Windows OS except Windows 95, guess you meant the SDK and VS.NET.

Yes. I meant that Framework (contains sdk and Redistributable at the same
time) cannot be installed on WIN98.

If we only consider ".NET Framework Redistributable", it can be installed
on win98.

For more information, please refer to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/productinfo/sysreqs/d...

If you just want to install ".NET Framework Redistributable" rather than
Framework sdk and VS.NET, there is one method you can try.
I cannot make sure it must resolve your problem. After all, the
installation is somewhat complex.

Rename the Mscoree.dll file in \Windows\System.

1. Click Start, then click Run.

2. In the Open box type MSCONFIG

3. On the General tab click the Advanced button.

4. Place a checkmark in the box next to Enable Start Up Menu.

5. Click OK.

6. Click OK again to exit the Microsoft Configuration Utility.

7. When prompted to restart the computer click Yes.

8. When the system restarts we will be presented with a Windows 98
StartUp Menu. Select Safe Mode.

9. Rename the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mscoree.dll as mscoree.old.

10. Restart the computer into Normal Mode.

11. Install .Net Framework again.

Thanks.

The original poster is talking about the redistributable, see last line of original posting.
....
I have included a copy of the dotNetFx.log file below.

And for me the Frameworks is the Redistributable, else I'm talking about the SDK.

Willy.

Yes. framework can be installed on win98. I just mean framework SDK cannot
be installed on win98.

Does Renaming Mscoree.dll help? I mentioned it in the last email.

Thank you for your information.

Your mscoree.dll isn't under Windows\System. It is strange! If the version
is release version, For win98, the dll should be in Windows\System while it
would be in Windows\System32\ for Windows XP.

I hope it isn't the cause that your installation fails :-)

Reinstallation of Visual Studio .NET is somewhat complex. We need to remove
the old corrupt install of the Framework and start a new install.

Another related KB is Installation of .NET Framework Fails and Requires
Manual Removal (Q320112). You can find it at

Thanks for the 'Mscoree.dll' tip.

I'll try it on Monday and let you know how it goes.

Cheers,

Paul Booth.

It certainly can be installed on Win98 as I have put it on two Win98
machines in the office with no problems. However, I am going to have
trouble distributing my application if any more of the Win98 machines
are unable to load the .Net Framework in the way I have described
above.

Does anyone have any idea why it is failing? FYI, the installation
usually starts to freeze at the file Microsoft.Vsa.dll

Thanks,

Paul Booth.

And no - I can't get them to upgrade to Win2K. This is a government
department and OS upgrades move at a glacial pace.

I tried to rename C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mscoree.dll but it didn't exist.

However, I searched for the file mscoree.dll and found it in the
folder

Windows\System32\URTtemp

I did some searching on Google and found a Microsoft article (Q312383)
which gave instructions for removing Visual Studio .NET Beta and
Release Candidate Versions.

I followed these (even though I had not installed a beta version) and
was then able to successfully install the .Net framework.

I think the problem occured because I had originally tried to install
the .Net framework a few weeks ago but had run out of disk space.

Thank you all for your help.
