Could it be that you rather mean MLM software like Majordomo, Petidomo
ezmlm, or Mailman? If so the license model needs to be taken into
account for two reasons:

a) The amount of money you need to pay depends on it.
b) Some licenses do not give you the right to modify the software.

It is not that uncommon to suppress the initial 'something'.
The more interesting question is: What kind of iron is meant here?
