USB Mass storage device causing boot to hang

Just rebuilt my XP machine after a HD crash. Runnig SP3. My Maxtor 1TB
external HD backup was a savior. However, not the machine will not boot with
the drive attached. It hangs at:
Auto-detecting USB Mass storage devices, (sometimes 01, sometimes 05).
If I plug the Maxtor in after the machine boots it works like a charm...
until the next boot.
Help please?

I think this may be a PC BIOS issue, and have nothing to do with Windows. I
have the problem with some USB mass-storage (memory stick) devices. Check
your BIOS settings.
