You should probably do a diagnostic if your
I/O routines are faster than your CPU :)

Anecdotally, Dvorak has been great. I've no doubt that
one can write fast either on QWERTY or Dvorak; to me the
main advantage is the reduced stress on my hands.

I learned Dvorak by printing out a key layout and placing
it between my keyboard and monitor (learned to touch-type
at the same time). The first week was pretty painful but
I regained (and subsequently surpassed) my earlier speed
in about two weeks. The important bit is to not skip
between Dvorak and QWERTY while learning (so it might be
a good idea to start on your vacation instead of in the
middle of a Big Project:)
