start of the 90's where people would ask "which is faster, VB or C", to
which the answer (from the VB side) was usually "VB, by about 6 months"

Indeedy. If I've got a job that needs to run inside 30sec and Ruby does it
in 20, I'm less than concerned that C++ might do it in 0.2. If it has to go
faster than 'straight' Ruby, I can always recode the bottleneck in something
else that takes longer to write and keep most of the code (and hence most of
the flexibility) where I want it.
