Try using:

GridViewRow pagerRow = GridView1.BottomPagerRow.Cells[0]

I found a post (Aug 06) on some Microsoft website saying that this was a
bug in the framework. I didn't really understand whether they said it
was fixed or when there would be a patch but it seemed to work for us.
