ASP.NET 2.0 Mobile Controls Device Updates

Hi everybody

In dotnet1.1 Microsoft released updates for the Mobile Control Devices (at
least for a while).
Does anybody know if they are going to release updates for ASP.NET 2.0 as
well?

Hello Nadav,

Welcome to the ASP.NET mobile newsgroup.

As for the Mobile Device updates for ASP.NET mobile application, it is
still supported and will be continually updated for the ASP.NET 2.0 or
furture version. Actually, the device updates are some profile and
configuration info specific to those common devices, these settings are not
specific to .net framework or ASP.NET version. So the devices info in the
deviceds update for 1.1 still can be used for ASP.NET 2.0 MOBILE
application. The difference between ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 is the
device/browser capability configuration structuer has changed. In ASP.NET
1.1, the browser/device profile info is stored in the <browserCap> section
in machine.config and the device update will also update that section (or
use external linked file). In ASP.NET 2.0, due to community member's
feedback, the dev team has changed the browser setting back to the
".browser" file model, and you can find those existing browser templates in
the following framework dir:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\Browsers

pre-ASP.NET web app to ASP.NET 1.X and ASP.NET 2.0:

Therefore, in ASP.NET 2.0, we can choose to update new device/browser info
through a .browser file in the "Browsers" folder:

create a custom device profile, you can access the service from the

Hi Steven,
Thank you for your reply.

I have used the site at http://www.asp.net/mobile/profile/de...
to generate device profile for new devices.

However, it's time consuming and it's not always that easy to find technical
information on some cellular phones.
Also for some devices I have been unable to create a device profile that
works (The documentation of the mobile browserCapabilities properties leaves
much to be desired - for 2 of properties the ONLY documentation I have been
able to find in MSDN was a table in the device update release notes that
mentions they have been added in that update..).
I hope that microsoft will release device updates (or that the cellular
phone companies will start releasing ASP.NET device profiles for their
phones).

Thanks for your quick response Nadav,

Yes, the existing device profile schema provided in the device update
packages still have limited devices. And for a new device update package, I
think it may still take some time since the product team will have to
calculate information from device vendors and perform lots of tests on
them. Anyway, it is always helpful and important to hear feedback from the
community. So please feel free to submit the your request so that the dev
guys can get more voice on this.
