Salad recall expanded after listeria contamination
Some bags of salads being distributed to restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, the canadian food inspection agency says.

Brands included in the recall announced sunday are river ranch and sysco natural.

This is the second salad recall in as many days.The cfia also warned shoppers that some compliments salads with expiry dates between may 12 and may 22 may be contaminated as well.Those products are sold at sobeys, iga and foodland.

The food may not look or smell bad, but a food safety specialist with the cfia said people shouldn't take a risk.

"Do not consume the product discard it, destroy it.There is no cure for it in terms of cooking,"Said shashi kulkarni.

There have been no reported illnesses caused by consuming the products, but kulkarni said the effects of listeria may appear long after it's consumed.

Listeriosis causes high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.It can be particularly harmful to seniors and people with weakened immune systems.

"Listeria is one of the in clear language nasty bacteria.A pathogen that can be a serious concern for average individuals, including pregnant women,"He said.

Kulkarni said it's not known how the products were contaminated.He said it may be in the fields or the processing factory.
