Lithuanian supermarket shopping filter

Lithuanian supermarket shopping filterThis is what I'd tell you about milk in Armenia:1. Look for a date. Here the date range is 35 days. Try to buy a carton that still has a few days left on it.2. Look for a %. Here in Armenia most brands have a 2.3%, 3.6% and 4.5% (approximately) and I buy the 3.6% to make scrambled eggs. I found the 2.3% to be too skimmed.3. If you care if it is pasturized, buy the most professional looking carton. And maybe Lithuania is a lot abercrombie and fitch outlet online different from the Caucasus, but longchamp uk sale here there is often English, French, German, etc. on the packaging of just about everything.posted by k8t at 5:10 AM on June 4, 2008Something I've found different in different longchamp uk sale places is the meaning of the date. In the US and several other places I've lived the date is a future date, the day the milk is expected to last until on the store shelf. In other places though, the date is the day it went on the shelf. So, I'd look at all the stuff on the shelf and look for past or future dates, of course if the "future date" has passed, which I've seen in some "less developed" parts of the world, then you are up the creek.Milk in the cartons, usually not in the refrigerated section is irradiated milk. It lasts months unopened. The stuff in the bag is usually fresh milk, but again, if its found outside the firdge, its irradiated. Irradiated is not bad, it's just different. In fact, since it lasts longer, there's actually less waste, so that's a good thing.posted by Pollomacho at 6:02 AM on June 4, 2008'pienas' simply means 'milk' in links of london charms Lithuanianpackaging is pretty standard so look for the % fat that you prefersources of milk in Lithuania:karves pienas = cows milkozku pienas = goats milksuris = cheese and yogurtas = yogurtyou can buy the milk in <a href="http://www.libreria-apogeo.it/..."&... ugg italia glass bottles or in cartonsfeel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Just pointing that out due to some people's fears of irradiated foods.I've found that the UHT stuff on the shelf is fine if you're not drinking it straight.posted by cabingirl at 8:08 abercrombie and fitch outlet online AM on June 4, 2008It's not irradiated, it's UHT. Just pointing that out due to some people's fears of irradiated foods.True, true, my bad. I think that comes from the term we links of london charms used for such products in my youth (which probably were inaccurately called irradiated then too). UHT is indeed what I meant. In Lituania all the milk's probably been irradiated by Chernobyl anyway, so drink up!posted by Pollomacho at 8:40 AM on June 4, 2008Thanks for your help. I have interesting visions of what you think I might be doing with milk in my hotel room besides drinking it. Making a milk pudding? Bathing in it? I suppose I stivali ugg italia could be putting it in instant coffee if I had a kettle.Encouraged by your ideas I went and searched through the relevant fridge. The plastic bags (penguins or not) seemed to have just the month and year, so I guess were UHT, even though the label had a word like pasteurized which in the UK would mean only a short shelf life. The handsome glass bottle turned out to be plastic and I was a bit suspicious of it.I abercrombie milano settled on a carton labelled "Pienas naturalus dvaro", with a date a couple of days in the future. It has multilingual stuff on the side in Lithuanian, Latvian and Russian, so it didn't help much, except that the Lithuanian does have "pasterizuotas". It tasted OK, and I expect that I will survive.
